Elections Alberta sets referendum voting rules and results timing

Elections Alberta has released preliminary turnout figures for the referendum’s advance and special-ballot voting. Voting locations will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, and electors may vote only at their assigned location. Eligible electors can register at their assigned voting place on October 19 if they are not already registered. Voters must prove their identity and current physical address, with more than 50 ways to do this. Employers must provide employees with enough time to have three consecutive, non-work hours to vote. Unofficial results are to be published within 48 hours after all voting locations close on October 19.

Wainwright voting locations will open as planned after base fire

Both scheduled Election Day voting locations in Wainwright will open as planned on October 19, Elections Alberta says. Elections Alberta offered condolences to the Armed Forces, Wainwright and those affected by the tragedy.

More than 1.3 million Albertans voted before referendum day

Elections Alberta says 1,356,873 votes were cast through advance and special ballots between Oct. 13 and Oct. 17. That compares with 809,988 votes cast at the same point in the 2023 provincial election campaign. Advance voting accounted for 837,791 ballots, while 519,082 special ballots were mailed in. The agency says 43 per cent of the referendum’s 3,148,343 eligible electors voted during the advance period.

Alberta’s referendum history includes liquor and daylight saving

Alberta’s provincial governments have asked voters eight direct questions over the past 111 years. The province will ask voters 10 more questions on Monday. Alberta’s first plebiscite in 1915 followed pressure from the United Farmers of Alberta and other groups for direct legislation. The 1915 vote approved the Liquor Act, with 61 per cent voting yes. A 1948 vote narrowly kept electricity distribution in its existing mix of municipal and private operations.

Pro-unity rally at Alberta legislature follows Wainwright deaths

A pro-unity rally was held at the Alberta legislature one day before the referendum vote on Alberta’s place in Canada. Four military members were killed and dozens more were seriously injured in the fire at CFB Wainwright. The Alberta Federation of Labour led a moment of silence for first responders and those killed or injured. Polls will be open Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The United Nurses of Alberta said it was shocked and saddened by the events at CFB Wainwright. The union offered condolences to military members, their families and community members affected by the injuries and deaths.
