2SLGBTQ+ groups leave Edmonton Pride over police presence

Several 2SLGBTQ+ organizations have cut ties with the Edmonton Pride Festival over an increased police presence and questions about a police-affiliated group's parade application. Festival organizers said the increased police presence is part of a safety plan for the Edmonton Pride Parade and Trans March this weekend. Pride Corner on Whyte, pflag Edmonton and the Edmonton Lesbian Event Network said they would cut ties with the festival.

Edmonton Pride organizers defend police presence at parade

Edmonton Pride parade organizers say they stand by having police present at this weekend's procession. The Edmonton PrideFest Association announced additional security and police presence after attacks at Lapu Lapu Day events in Vancouver and Pride celebrations in Berlin. Multiple groups, including RaricaNow, said they would cut ties with the festival over the police presence and other issues. RaricaNow founder Adebayo Chris Katiiti said police have historically mistreated LGBTQ+ and racialized communities.
