Birchcliff Energy fined $312,500 after worker's death

Birchcliff Energy Ltd. has been fined $312,500 after admitting it failed to ensure the safety of a worker who died on an oil and gas site. David Olesiuk, 43, fell into a reservoir near Baytree in Saddle Hills County while gathering water samples on October 10, 2023. The fines will provide $200,000 to Energy Safety Canada for water-surface safety training and $112,000 to Saddle Hills Protective Services for rescue training.

Two hurt, suspect in custody after Edmonton gurdwara attack

Two people were hurt and a suspect was arrested after an apparent attack during early morning prayers at Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton on Friday. Police received a 911 call at 5:08 a.m. and responded to a reported stabbing near 14 Street and Horsehill Rd. Two adult males were treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries, and the gurdwara was closed as the investigation continued.

16-year-old boy charged in Hairsine death of 16-year-old girl

Edmonton police have charged a 16-year-old boy in connection with the homicide of a 16-year-old girl in Hairsine. The girl died of a gunshot wound, and her death was deemed a homicide. Neither the accused nor the victim can be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police investigate fatal motorcycle collision in Edmonton

Edmonton police are investigating a fatal collision involving a vehicle and a motorcycle near 34 Street and 64 Avenue. Police said a motorcycle struck the rear of a 2017 Land Rover Range Rover while both were travelling southbound on 34 Street. The 21-year-old male motorcyclist died at the scene, while the Range Rover's 44-year-old female driver and two passengers reported no injuries. Police say speed is believed to have been a factor.
