Alberta minister faces questions over AI data centre plans

Technology Minister Nate Glubish faced questions from residents at a town hall in Redwater over the government's plan for artificial intelligence data centres. Residents raised concerns about water, land, electricity, safeguards and the promised jobs. Glubish said Meta's project represents indirect economic benefits and that 300 jobs are worth pursuing.

Alberta Utilities Commission rejects Synapse power plant proposal

The Alberta Utilities Commission rejected Synapse Real Estate Corp.'s application to build and operate a 1,400-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant with 1,800 megawatts of backup diesel generation in Olds. The facilities would have been located beside a large-scale data centre and supplied it exclusively rather than connecting to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. The commission concluded that the proposed location was not in the public interest.
